trying to restore

GPGError: GPG Failed, see log below: ===== Begin GnuPG log ===== gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found. gpg: decrypt_message failed: Unknown system error ===== End GnuPG log =====

I have just made this backup today and reinstalled zorin to restore the backups too as I wanted to set up new on a m.2 2280 ssd. Now when I restore using my password, this is the error I receive. I did see some things about a resolution using some gnupg conf file and giving more parameters but I dont know how to do that. Can someone help give me a step by step. I am very new to linux.

Proposed fix - however i do not know how to do this

Add the following to ~/.gnupg/gpg.conf:

use-agent
pinentry-mode loopback

And to your ~/.gnupg/gpg-agent.conf:

pinentry-program /usr/bin/pinentry-gtk-2
allow-loopback-pinentry

Then restart the agent with echo RELOADAGENT | gpg-connect-agent.

The restore work even if the keys are only on the local machine. I still don't get why it does not ask for the passphrase when making incremental though.

Hello, dnscouple & welcome to LQ.

Have you passworded a backup? If you have a corrupt PGP file you won't restore it. Say goodbye to it. That's the extent on my knowledge. Even with the NSA behind you, that's a difficult one, and I don't think the NSA have registered on LQ yet.

lesson #1: Never encrypt anything you are not prepared to lose.

There's an occasional traffic through here of people wanting to make their data super-secure, but not appreciating all the rigour, discipline & precautions necessary to hold such highly encrypted data safely. Did you even encrypt a Meg of data and check that you can decrypt it safely? They are often talked out of their plans. Sometimes go away in tears.
