Zenwalk Core.
 

Sorry, for a dumb question, but I was wondering what it means when the core version says that it has no x applications. Is there a desktop (namely XFCE)? When it boots up is there a graphical login ? If the answer to those is yes, then this is the version that I want. I would like to have a desktop GUI like XFCE without a lot of applications installed. I want to be able to choose my own. I do not want to install The x server and all of that stuff from the command line, though.

X server and XFCE are applications ;) so ... Core has no X(FCE).

installing XFCE + deps (Xorg, ....) is really easy from CLI, just "netpkg xfce && videoconfig" and you'll have a start ;).

Anyway i think you might have a try to the standard Zenwalk. Zenwalk standard is definitely not as much bloated as many distribution.
Most of time people want to use core to have the only packages/progs they want because they think standard will install a lot of unused apps.

In fact when they do it and look back they installed at least 80+% off standard. I know that because i did it at first, now i just install standard and uninstall < 10 packages with netpkg, it cost a lot less time (~ 20 minutes from box starting with install CD to a fully customized environment on a 1.7 PIV with 512 ram).

Thank you for your helpfull post, it helped me a long way. But I have come to a problem. I ran the command you gave, I answered yes on all questions about what to install. Then I was giving a brief setup, when I clicked that I wanted a graphical login, I was turned back to my terminal. I didn't know what to do next, so I gave the command to halt.

But when rebooting my machine, I get an error message in yellow that I can't have a graphical login, because I've got no KDE and the likes. Anyway to get past this? I would rather not expirement too much myself, because I am not yet that confident in Linux terms. Thank you in advance.

As guth said: if you don't know what you're doing, it's much easier to install standard and remove the couple of packages you don't need. ;)
