compositors and wobbly windows etc

I've got the just released ZW7 Gnome edition installed.
The Compositor works OK, but, there doesn't appear to be anyway to get anything other than dropshadows using it.
Is it possible to get transparencies and wobbly windows working using the 'comes with' compositor?

When you say the "comes with" compositor, I assume you mean the one build into metacity in gnome2. Wobbly windows is provided by more advanced compositors such as compiz. Or kwin (if you're using KDE4) or gnome-shell (if you are using gnome3).

Yes, I do mean the built in one.

I tried to get compiz working but am stuck at the point where to type "compiz --replace" leads to no window borders and a frozen desktop.

I'm not at all familiar with zenwalk, but on non-debian based distributions, you need to run compiz with the ccp plugin. 'compiz --replace ccp &'. You also need to configure the plugins you want to use in ccsm (such as "window decoration", "move window", "resize window", etc.).
