apt-get update hangs

Hi!

This is my first, ever, thread so bare with me.

I've been running Yoper for a couple of months but are having some difficulty with upgrading through apt-get, same problem both with graphical gui and trough consol. Downloading and preparing packages works fine but when installing starts the apt application hangs after a while. I have noticed that it hangs the first time when it installs an updated version of Xfree. I have the, after an hour of wait, restarted the pc and rerun the apt-get and receive a package conflict which I solve and the I try to update the system again but with the same result, it hangs after a wile in the same manner as before but during an install of an other package.

Is there somebody that has an idea of what could be the problem?

System: ASUS A7V 133, 1Gh Athlon, 756 Mb ram, 40 and 60 Gb disks, ATI 9200.

Well..

This issue I am currently working on myself. So, your not the only one.

What happens (So far I believe), is that Apt-get, be it Synaptic or via shell, basically *freezes* if an RPM is too large, and when it installs it, actually has dependencies that arent installed *first*

So basically its an order thing - but until I fix it or someone else does - try checking dependencies and installing the packages. It *generally* works.

Thanks!

Thanks Cliekid!

You saved me some time, because yesterday a started to fiddle around with my bios settings thinking that the settings for my hard drives could be the problem. When I ran apt-get through the consol I noticed every now and then that I got some kind of error message regarding the disk. But I can put it aside now. (I do not remember the exact message, at work now, but if it is of interest let me know and I post it.)

An update..

Concerning Apt-Get..

I have actually found a *temporary* solution to it.

The thing is, it *is* temporary. lol

I am actually attempting to port the Fedora Core 3 YUM, and just *call* it Apt-Get (Symlinks, anyone?)

If you want to help, email me. (nospam.cliekid@gmail.com). And, don't put the nospam. in front of the address..thats just for *precautions*.

So far its going well though, I just need to do some Header file work to get it fully working. Once I have it 100% I'll post the update here and on the Yoper forums once they are up.

I like the YUM in FC3 (Fixed quite a bit), so it should work well once completed.

Thanks!

Any updates on your YUM projects Cliekid ?

Yes, actually :-)

I'm modifying YUM to act more like apt-get...I've hit a couple of problems but I hope to be done soon :-)

Hi all,
I'm having this same problem, but I don't understand what you mean. Can anyone please describe this temporary solution in simpler terms?
