X windows setup questions

I have three questions.

I installed Vector Linux 3.2 on my old P 166 MMX computer with 32 MB of ram.

The install was great. When I typed "startx" I had an error with my vertical refresh rate. I went into vi and fixed the config file (so I am not a complete idiot, see). After that when I typed startx I was taken to a menu to choose the gui I wanted. Xterm, icewm, etc. Every one of the selections takes me to a graphical environment where the "desktop" area is more narrow than my monitor and much taller than my monitor will allow. The result is I see the middle (top to bottom) 50-60% of my desktop area with (I presume) as much falling off the bottom and falls off the top of my monitor. Also, it appeared that my mouse was not working in the gui. My monitor is as old as the computer and does not have controls to alter the picture view. So,

1. Where do I go to fix this problem?

2. I found the (I can not remember it's name) X setup program that ran during the install. I ran it thinking that it might solve my problem. Nope. Instead, I introduced another one, when I type startx it fails because the protocol for my mouse is set to NULL. Now, I can not find the set up program again (basically I can not remember it's name). So, how do I fix the mouse, and/or what is the name of the setup program?

3. I was (in college) a unix user. I am very familiar with unix and have been playing with the command prompt. However, I have never bee the administrator of a UNIX box, is there any sort of resouce/primer you might recommend?
