I've got a new video card and a modem on the way from ebay.

That should make for a few good experiments.

Video card up and running.

Big improvement. The chip is SIS 6326 with 4 MB of RAM.

I got another modem. It has an Intel 536EP chip.

It's not a hardware modem. It needs a software driver. Intel has one for linux on their website that I downloaded. It needs to be compiled.

If I can compile it, can I keep the compiled executable and use it in other places?

I've got to install Slackware to get a compiler. Can I use the compiled executable with Vector?

intel 536ep modem

Stuck again.

I can compile the modem driver with slackware by following instructions that come with it.

It looks like it installs okay.

When the computer boots up it says, "error loading 536epcore"

I'm all out of ideas. Any suggestions.

I got it working

I tossed out the "Intel" modem.

The ebay ad said it was "intel hardware based". It's a generic software modem with an Intel chip. No good.

I got a nice US Robotics modem for about $10. from someone else on ebay, then configured the jumpers to COM2/IRQ3 and now I'm up and running.

I'm using Slackware 9.1/KDE/Konqueror with kppp. Maybe I'll try Vector after I rest for a while.

Now I'm free.

I wonder if I had a COM port conflict with that other Intel chip PCI modem?

I selected various com ports in the Linux setup but I never disabled the COM2 serial conection in the BIOS.
