problem during vector linux install

While installing vector linux 4.0 on my toshiba satellite 315cdt it gives an error during the xfree43 install. i didnt get a chance to write it down before it skipped past and finished the rest of the installation with out a problem. the computer booted up fine afterwards. when i try to run "startx" i get:
Host name look up failure
xauth: error while loading shared libraries: libXmuu.so.1: cannot open shared object file: no such file or directory

it then repeats that another 5 times.
after trying that i stuck the vector linux cd back in and tried to install the xfree43.bz2, it starts to tar it and then gives me this error:

bzip2: I/O or othererror, bailing out. possible reason follows.
bzip2: Input/output error
Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout)
usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/lutRS18-ISO8859-9.pcf.gz
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

obviously some thing in that package didnt work right for me. does any one know of another way i can try to get this working.

Have you tried installing the older version of xfree - 3.x ? Your video card may not be supported in the newer release.

Standard: might try md5summing and re-downloading if you got a bad download.

Sounds like the archive's corrupt, which means it probably half-installed X - hence missing libs and whatnot. libXmuu is part of the XFree86 package so, if it ain't on there, X is not completely installed. And I dunno how old toshiba satellites are but might try what carlywarly says, as well.

Check this list too:ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/dist...on_table2.html to see if that Toshiba is "strong enough" for VL4.0.
You might want to try one of the earlier versions.

Well it looks like the first problem was related to a curropted file. I redownloaded vl 4.0 last night and it installed fine. but i guess my video card isnt supported cause "statrx" still wont work (i would of posted the error message but i already started loading 3.2 on the computer). Thanks for the advise.

Just making sure - did you configure X? Because, 3.2 or 4.0, you'll probably need define your card and monitor and all. They may indeed not be supported, but X rarely works out of the box. To configure X, try 'xf86cfg -textmode' or whichever you'd like. I hear about those boxes around here all the time, so I know some folks have got some versions of them up - though if I hear about them all the time it must mean they have some trouble doing it.
