booting windows useing the lilo
Hi Guys,
I've got a 20 GB h/d running windows on hdb2, slackware on hdb5 & Mango on hdb6. I boot the sys useing a floppy disk as the distros cannot write the grub or the lilo on to the MBR. This has failed many times.
Well what entry should i make on the lilo.conf to boot Windows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How could i fix my MBR. (I tried fdisk /mbr , but this didn't work)
How could I mount my samsung dvd rom on slackware!!!!!!!!
Well what entry should i make on the lilo.conf to boot Windows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mine looks like:
# Windows bootable partition config begins
other = /dev/hda1
label = Windows
table = /dev/hda
# Windows bootable partition config ends.
Obviously adjust for your setup.

With "mount /dev/dvd /path/to/mount/point"? The mount point you want to mount to must exist before you try to mount there. There might be an entry in your /etc/fstab for the device already, so check there.
PS: Do you really need to use all those exclamation marks? They should really be question marks, anyway.

well everytime i use a distro to write on to the MBR it says "the lilo has failed to write to the MBR ( Well something like that) Previously I installed SUSE & this did fix my problum but i have now formatted the partition. My bros pissed with me coz his windows o/s not working hahaha.
Failing to write to MBR reminds me one thing - "Virus Warning" enable in BIOS !! Can you check your BIOS settings and see if "Virus Warning" is enabled ? If it is, just disable it and you should be able to write to MBR.
Even after that, you are unable to write to MBR, there's a way to boot into any if the OS installed on your machine using NTLDR. For this you'll need to install GRUB to the boot sector of linux root partition and use dd command to copy the bootsector of the root partition to file. Next, copy the to thw C: drive of Windoz and modify the boot.ini to include the following line.
C:\slackware.bin="Slackware <version>"
Replace slackware.bin by the filename to which you saved the contents of boot sector of root partition.
Finally change the boot flag to boot Windoz by default. The next time you boot windows should display boot options from which you can choose which operating to choose from !
PS: Make sure there is a timeout=<no-of-seconds-to wait> parameter in boot.ini file. If not, just add this line before the 'default=........" line and set it to the seconds you want to wait before it boots into the default choice.
Should you need more info on this come back and tell me so.
Good luck !!
