Yahoo! Launch Music Streaming
Well, I searched through this forum and so far have not found an answer. So I'm starting this thread to document what I/we find for future reference.
About a week ago, I decided to burry the windows from my home computers. So far it has been smooth sailing. I'm still able to play Steam games and my favorite browser is already up and running(Firefox). I installed ies4linux because of Yahoo!'s Launch Music service. I'm an SBC Yahoo! DSL customer and I'm used to listening to their streaming radio stations while working/playing on the computer. Yes, I now have IE 6.0 installed but without WMP how can I listen to Yahoo! Launch Music? The service only works with that browser+media player combination. They have been saying for years now that an open source version is in the works. I hope it works with Firefox and any open source media player whenever it comes out. Please share your experiences or "how-I-did-its" in this thread, if any. Thanks for your input. |

http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Dapper If that doesn't work, only other suggestion I have, would be to try Crossover or Wine. I find Crossover to be a lot more stable than Wine with windows emulation. Wine is free, and works pretty well for the most part. I have a couple programs I need, and one just will not work with Wine. So I installed Crossover, and bam, works perfectly. It has a free 30 day trial, then its $40 to register. To me, it was more than worth it, especially since I was able to completely Dump M$. I just checked, and one of the programs Crossover will install automatically and apparently is confirmed to work with, is Windows Media Player 6.4. I don't know what version you need, but I think that version is pretty old(aren't they up to 10 now?) You could try downloading the exe from the M$ site, then try to install it with Wine or Crossover, and go from there... Wine is probably in the Ubuntu repositories if you look, if not you can add it following the insructions on the site. Installing Crossover is also very simple by following the instructions on their site. Good luck http://www.winehq.com http://www.codeweavers.com IGF |
So far everything I've found on the 'net about Yahoo! Launch and Linux only talks about playing the videos. Nothing specific about the music streaming portion of the site. I'm going to give one of the Yahoo! Launch video-howtos a try. We'll see what happens.
