Xubuntu or Ubuntu server versions & RAID
 

Hi Ubuntu community.

I was considering installing Ubuntu/Xubuntu on our brand new IBM System X3400 server. I read through all of the documentation but can't find anything about using RAID with it. I would like RAID0/1 (2 hard drives that are mirrored). I have never used RAID or Ubuntu before.

This server will be responsible for file/application sharing, Internet caching (squid), internet filtering (squidGuard) and printer queuing. I will set up a separate box with smoothwall for a firewall.

I wanted a distribution that would be light weight so as not to take up hard drive space, but powerful enough to handle network traffic and not be "stumped" by our brand-spanking-new server's hardware. over the next 5 years, be able to take advantage of growing network demands. I also need to be able to burn DVD's for backup. Currently my backup program is Mondo. I like how Xubuntu is set up as a very basic distro where you add on only the things you need.

Our current distribution is Mandrake, but I've had so many problems with it as a server that I'm ready to ditch it. I've decided on Ubuntu through suggestions from this board, although, I must say that I have tried the "Ubuntu desktop Live CD" on 3 separate machines and none of them could boot with it (yes the CD was good). Hopefully it works better once it's installed!

My questions are: Do you think Xubuntu is a good decision for our needs?
2. Can it be used in a RAID configuration, and, if so, where can I find documentation on how to set this up? Surely there is a HOWTO somewhere.

Xubuntu or Ubuntu are based on Debian. If I were to put a distro on a server, it would be Debian itself, not a Debian derivative distro. However, you need to check out SME as well since you haven't solidified on a server distro yet. Distrowatch.com will have some links and information for you on these.
