Xubuntu on Removable hard disk

I have a Iomega 80 GB usb external hard disk. I wish to install Xubuntu on it and carry it to work on my home PC and the office PC.

Both the office and home PCs have Fedora Core 5 installed on them and I need to access data in them sometimes, but in general I will work with the external disk only. I would like to install few Proprietary softwares like Mathematica etc. too on the external drive.

Is Xubuntu a right choice for the purpose ? And how to install it on the usb disk so that it may recognize the host machine's hard disks too.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I had Kubuntu installed on an external hard drive and it seemed able to detect other hard drives on same machine without any trouble. I would guess Xubuntu should work about the same.
