xubuntu on eeepc - xfce - need to set custom resolution - how?

Hello there, I'm trying to figure out how to set the resolution to a custom size (not sure what though). I looked at other threads and didn
t quite see what I was looking for.

Anyways, I'm running xubuntu 12.04. Everything's great, all hardware running fine, just the bottom of my screen is cut off. I can't change it to anything besides 800x480 or 640x480.

Running an ASUS eeepc 4g surf

See this link.

You probably need to set the resolution to 800x600.

Looks like 800x480 may be your best option (see this)

Well I haven't been able to do anything since I'm getting this error. I did it without sudo thinking that might be the issue, but when following the linked instructions, this is what happened.

Quote:

$ sudo xrandr --newmode <Modeline>
bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
It's currently 800x480.

Is there some.thing I can do to help with the programs being cut off at the bottom?

800x480 is the resolution of your monitor. It is not physically possible to set the resolution higher than the number of pixels!

If a program is cut off at the bottom of the screen then hold down the Alt key, click on the window, and drag it so you can see the part that is cut off.
