Xubuntu 7.10 Booting Black Screen after splash instead of desktop login page

have a IBM T20 laptop running Xubuntu 7.10. It can boot up, but it freezes after the loading bar is complete on the splash screen. Completely black screen appears instead of login screen. Can actually login and enter password blindly and hear system startup...but screen remains black.

I have to turn it on and off like 2-3 times before it successfully displays the login screen. After that, i can restart the computer or shut down and start it up with no problem. But after it sits off for a while the same thing occurs. I can tell when it is going to boot fine by when there's some weird colors flickering right before the login page shows.

Is this a known bug,,? anyone else see this one ?

Love the operating system otherwise...

Thanks,.

I have had problems with this myself and yes it is a known problem. It should be fixed in the next release. I think this is what I did to fix it. I know it fixed one of the problems I had at boot.

In a terminal type:
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

Scroll down to the boot options. Delete the quiet and splash or change them to noquiet and nosplash. It made more since to me to just delete them. I want to watch what does and does not load correctly during boot.

Save and on the next reboot it should be working for you.

PS:
I at a few times now, just push the escape key and the screen comes to life. Also, you should check your BIOS for power managenment or screen setting. It might be off when you need it to be on.

Thanks for the reply roofninja.

Made the chg's you suggested, now I can see the full boot process without the splash screens, but I still have to boot multiple times to be able to see the login screen. However I can tell the op sys booted fine because I can login blindly (without seeing anything) and know that it is taking my login id and password...and then can hear the drives being accessed...etc..but no video..screen is able to be brighted and dimmed via keyboard, laptop is not frozen, caps lock on and off is fine.

Thanks,

JS
