xubuntu 7.04 networking

Hi,

I'm new to ubuntu/xubuntu; and hoping to get some help for the networking issue with xubuntu.

Booting from the xubuntu 7.04 Live CD (autoconfigured with DHCP), I cannot get it connected to the network. It cannot ping to any network devices; and no other device can ping it either.

So I installed ubuntu 7.04 server, autoconfigured with DHCP. It was connected to the network; I can access www.yahoo.com. So far so good.

Then I decided to install xubuntu 7.04 over the ubuntu 7.04 server, using the following commands:

sudo apt-cdrom add [I used the xubuntu 7.04 alternative CD]
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install xubuntu-desktop

The install was successful.
But after I booted into xubuntu, I lost the network connection.
It can only ping itself; not to anywhere else.

Thanks for your help.

Harry

So have you tried activating the network connection?

No Luck

Yes.

I have tried using DHCP and STATIC IP; tried using the admin gui and vi to edit the /etc/network/interfaces.

It cannot find the DHCP server; so the networking completely does not work if it configured with DHCP. (But with ubuntu7.04-server, it worked just fine. And 1GB+ files have been downloaded when I install xubuntu on top of ubuntu!)

With static IP, it can ping itself. That's all.

Yes.

I checked with "ifconfig -a". Tried "ifconfig eth0 up"; "/etc/init.d/networking stop/start/restart".

The "ifconfig -a" output tells me the network device is up and running; unless it tells me wrong! But it just cannot ping any other network device; and no other network device can ping xubuntu either.

Guess I'll have to avoid xubuntu for a while.

Right - nic is configured and up - no access to external network.
(I'd be happier to see the output of those commands...)

What is this "network" you are using?

But it is very very odd... installing the desktop should not do anything to the network access. As everything up to the nic works, you aren't running a firewall, I start to suspect that you are being blocked at the server.

Though, you installed the desktop from the CD - the same CD you tried to install xubuntu from in the first place?

I would suggest going back to the server install (where dhcp works) and installing Xfce directly over the network.

Or you can test your existing install in another network.

xubuntu7.10 networking

Actually, I am not sure if xubuntu7.04 was installed from CD. It was a surprise to me when I saw on the screen that it was downloading from an archive site. It took me half a day to get the files downloaded and installed. (Was it downloading the 7.10 upgrade? I downloaded my 7.04 CDs on Wendesday; and 7.10 was released on Friday?)

I cannot help to try the new xubuntu7.10 on my home pc.
This time, I do not have any problem with the network. Booting up from the LIVE CD, I am writing this post.

I'll try xubuntu7.04 one more time and this xubuntu7.10 next week on my office PC and see how it goes.

By the way, my home PC is a HP Media Center PC m7640n; it has a GeForce 6150 LE graphic card. It's not recognized by xubuntu. I can only use 800 x 600 resolution. Is there somewhere I can download a driver for it?

Regards,

Harry
