Xubuntu 7.04 LiveCD issue...

I just burned a copy of Xubuntu 7.04 (good cd - passed verification and md5sum tests) and I am getting it to boot without any problems. However, After everything loads up I am presented with the GDM login screen. Confused I started making blind guesses using random username password combinations: ubuntu/ubuntu kubuntu/kubuntu root/kubuntu root/ubuntu install/install root/install - etc etc. Nothing will login. I havent installed anything yet because it wont let me login to run the installation.

Last time I've used ubuntu software was 6.04 which didnt prompt for a username/password. So this seems pretty weird to me. So I checked the xubuntu site. Nothing is mentioned. I found the official xubuntu forums, this is mentioned 3 times. Two occasions the problem was not addressed/answered. The 3rd said the username was 'ubuntu' and the password was blank, but they were talking about the Ubuntu 6.10 livecd. So I tried that, with no success. So I started trying other usernames without a password.. Nothing.

I browsed around google, and the ubuntu and xubuntu mailing lists.. Nowhere can I find any information about this. LQ doesnt even return any results when searching...

Thus, here I am, asking on the best Linux site in the world. What is the correct username/password combination to login to the Xubuntu 7.04 livecd so I can install the software?

The user is most probably 'ubuntu' like it was said in the forum you mentioned, without any capital letters (it's been that in the past and I think it was that when I last used Ubuntu discs). I'm not sure about password, or if you can even use that -- I had the impression that with the live/desktop disc you don't need to use the password because you're logged in automatically (even on text terminals) and if you use sudo it's configured to work without password. Try CTRL+ALT+F1 (trough F6) and see if you can login via text console, it's a start at least. I think it's not normal for X/K/Ubuntu to ask you a password; maybe there went something wrong during the boot process?

If you can't (or even if you can) login via some text console, try rebooting and at the boot prompt select "low" specifications just in case. I don't think resolutions or colour depths have much to do with this if X starts ok, but at least you could use the "edit commands before booting" option and from the boot line replace the word splash with nosplash to disable boot splash screen and be able to actually see the messages during boot process. The other way to do this is to press CTRL+ALT+F1 during boot, but if you alter the boot line you'll see it more easily. Try to see if there are some errors or even minor problems.

I'll have to give that a shot today just for S&G's.

I ended up searching around a little more last night and I came across some kind of "tech support" site for Xubuntu. It had a lot of information. Most search results were irrelevant to me, but there were a few good ones in there. Some saying this is some kind of bug on the cd, others saying its hardware issues. Hardware issues causing a login prompt seems too far fetched for me, so i believe its a bug on the cd.

The best "answer" i found was to download the alternative install cd. This cd does not contain the livecd portion of the software, it's strictly a text-install cd. So I did this, and it pretty much worked exactly as a Debian install cd, so i was on familiar ground.

Xubuntu 7.04 is now installed and working just fine on my notebook. Thanks for your reply! Hopefully this post will get cached in google soon so it will help someone else. I'll post back if I find anything new about that livecd, like if it had errors behind that splash screen, etc.
