xserver-xgl -> system unacceptably slow!?

Hi, I recently upgraded to Gusty Gibbon and I installed xserver-xgl for being able to use 3d desktop effects.

Now, just by installing xserver-xgl, X is getting unacceptably slow! I know that 3d desktop effects would slow down the system - but I didn't even activate any of them!

The "Visual Effects" from the "Preferences" menu is set to "None"! But still, updating window contents is so slow I cannot work with this system.

Well, my system is not the newest, but I can run Quake 4 in quite good resolution and detail level - so for me it's fast enough! ;) What I do not understand is: do I have to configure xgl somehow? To me it seems strange that just running xgl slows down my so much...

Did anyone else encounter similar problems!?

Hi there,

I'm having the same problem as you are. Installed XGL under Kubuntu/Ubuntu 7.10, and it's extremely slow, even though I have installed a brand new ATI graphics card, and Quake 3 based games run easily under 1280x1024 resolution.

I've been reading up and the Ubuntu guide on XGL says that it's not compatible with 7.10, although there doesn't seem to be a Gusty version of the guide.

I tried installing beryl, but because it isn't supported in Gusty, I had to download the packages manually from the Feisty archive, and even then things don't work!

Nobody seems to have any answers, let me know if you get any further with the problem.

Finally!

I am not alone! :)

The bad thing is... why is XGL not supported in Gusty?? I installed it using the standard "apt-get-install xserver-xgl", so I am pretty sure it is a Gusty version.

Well, anyway - my only solution is to un-install it again. :(

Then the "Visual Effects" only work without window decorations. The most interesting thing is: it's faster than having XGL installed and not using the 3d effects... *lol*

Hi again,

On the ubuntu documentation for XGL they do say that you shouldn't use the guide for 7.10, although there is no updated manual. I guess we'll just have to wait for them to produce a new manual...
