Just installed ubuntu 6.06 from the alternate cd, but when X should start I got an message telling me that there was some errors in the xserver config file "(or something similar)"
when manually logging in, running startx it gave me this message; Can not stat /etc/X11/X, no such file or directory
When I do an "ls" in /etc/X11 I can see that the X file / folder is missing..
Generally, you fix xserver problems by using sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg in Ubuntu. If that folder is missing, it may be that X wasn't installed (or installed properly). In which case you'll want to sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude reinstall ubuntu-desktop
Also, out of curiosity did you 'upgrade' with the alternate CD or do a clean install?
I found on my laptop that X also stuffed up after a couple of botched upgrade attempts..
I did a clean install with the Alternate CD and all is apples
now that i think about it - im pretty sure even when i did the clean graphical install with the alternate CD it gave the impression it hung for abot 30 miniutes... the hdd light ticked ever so often so i let it be... about 30 minutes later it rebooted and all was good...
intereting though- i forgot about that..
i think i had some horizontal lines going down my screen and that was all..
