I'm a Windows professional diving into Ubuntu to get started learning Linux. I installed the Dapper Drake on a P3 800 / 256M machine with some old ATI Rage type video card in it. The installation seemed to go fine, and booting up from the HD looks normal until the black and gold startup screen says it's starting X, at which point the screen goes black with a white cursor in the top left, which blinks a few times and then blinks no more.

What do I do next?
