Would I encounter any problems installing kubuntu 5.10 on Sata Hard drive?
 

Hi all.

I already have Kubuntu 5.10 on one of my pc's.
I like it so much I want to put it on my Dfi Nf3/250.

I have a Maxtor 100 gig Sata I'd like to put it on by it self.

I have windows xp booting off of a 120 gig Maxtor IDE.

I'll unhook the ide drive and install Kubuntu on the Sata.

I choose which to boot from in the bios.
This way, unhooking the IDE drive until Kubuntu installs won't affect my Ide drive...

My question.

Any reason why Kubuntu 5.10 would not install on a Maxtor Sata?

There might be a reason, but it would be related to your motherboard. It should install fine unless your SATA controller on the motherboard is not supported. But I think you'll find out as soon as you install. If you can't find your drive, your controller isn't recognized. Some BIOS let you make the SATA perform like an IDE (PATA) and that might get you around the problem if your controller isn't supported by Ubuntu...

I have Kubuntu Breezy installed on a Sata hard drive, and it has no problem. The only difference is that the partitions are /dev/sda* instead of /dev/hda*.

On a side note, may I suggest leaving the Windows drive plugged in. Install Kubuntu to the Sata drive, and it will pick up Windows and install a boot loader to the MBR so that you can select Kubuntu or Windows at bootup. Much easier than changing settings in Bios :)

Also, when you partition your Sata drive, create a FAT32 partition for a shared disk between Linux and Windows. Make the mount point /share, and windows will automatically assign it a drive letter.
