will this work with Gutsy

Hi,

I am contemplating the purchase of a new PC, a Dell Inspiron 530s

Parts:
Intel® Core™2 Duo E6550 Processor (2,33 GHz, 1333 MHz, 4 MB cache)
2.048 MB 667 MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM [2 x 1.024]
320 GB Seriële ATA/100 hard disk(7.200 rpm) with 16 MB DataBurst™-cache
Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3100
16x DVD+/-RW-station
Dell™ wireless Bluetooth-keyboard & mouse- VS/Euro (QWERTY)

Integrated 7.1-channel high-definition audio
19-in-1 memory card reader

Should I expect issues in running ubuntu?

Regards,

Peter

Take the liveCD with you to the computer store, and try it in the laptop you want to buy.

Errr ... 2 problems with that:
1. it's a desktop
2. it's not in a store, it's online (afaik, Dell doesn't have stores in Europe)

That build would work perfectly with gutsy. I run Gutsy on a similar computer at home. Should be no problem at all.

this box seems powerfull, i think there's no need to be afraid of installing gusty on it...

if it would be a lack, it MAY be in your graphic card...i'm pretty sure it's sufficient, but as i don't know well graphic cards other than nvidia, i'd tell you MAY have slowdowns running Compiz-Fusion in....let's say 2048x1536 or more with all 3D effects activated.

by the way, i don't recommend you nvidia to run with compiz-fusion, mostly because of their black window bug (when nvidia video cards memory is full, the new windows are all black) , so in the end, you shouldn't worry at all with this configuration

the other stuff won't give you any problem, that's for sure.

my 2 cents...

Just purchase an Inspiron 1420n with Ubuntu 7.04 pre-installed. It has Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 and works well. Dell has yet to supply 7.10 but is going to. Desktops are more strait forward for linux because there's little proprietary hardware in them like with laptops. You might consider ordering an Ubuntu desktop from Dell.
