this box seems powerfull, i think there's no need to be afraid of installing gusty on it...
if it would be a lack, it MAY be in your graphic card...i'm pretty sure it's sufficient, but as i don't know well graphic cards other than nvidia, i'd tell you MAY have slowdowns running Compiz-Fusion in....let's say 2048x1536 or more with all 3D effects activated.
by the way, i don't recommend you nvidia to run with compiz-fusion, mostly because of their black window bug (when nvidia video cards memory is full, the new windows are all black) , so in the end, you shouldn't worry at all with this configuration
the other stuff won't give you any problem, that's for sure.
Just purchase an Inspiron 1420n with Ubuntu 7.04 pre-installed. It has Integrated Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 and works well. Dell has yet to supply 7.10 but is going to. Desktops are more strait forward for linux because there's little proprietary hardware in them like with laptops. You might consider ordering an Ubuntu desktop from Dell.
