Wierd thing with KDE startup in Kubuntu

Hello,
I have recently started using kubuntu, a windows transferee. I have experimented with linux multipul times and I have decided to make kubuntu my new main OS. I used to be able to type startx, or startkde or something like that to get kde started but now I have to type xinit and then go to the mini xterm box in the upper-left and type in kdeinit or startkde (I don't remember which, its apperantly diffferent for each distro and I've been hopping around and I just try every combo till I get it) Then it starts but I constantly have an xterm box titled "login" that has to remain up or kde shuts down. I also can't open anyother shell except sh and this is annoying. This is also the same when starting up blackbox which I installed as soon as I started this (which is probobly when I messed something up) and now I just want to get it back. Running everything from alt+F2 is getting tediouse and in some cases impossible.

edit: Sorry, forgot to add something, when I open a terminal (konsole, xterm, ect...) it says "kde already seems to be running in this display" or at least something of that nature

Thanks in advanced guys,
NC

I've tried it. It comes up and says X terminated or shutdown or can't start or something. There isn't anything that directly says error but it says that a few things are alrady priority 0 (?) and it skipped a few things because no symbols were found. I could tell you what the things are but it would take a while and I'd rather not write them all down and then type it up unless I have to.

It sounds like you are starting a fail-safe session or something. I assume that the login manager is starting? There should be a menu that allows you to select KDE to start.

Try pressing Ctrl-Alt-F1 and running "sudo xorgconfig" to make sure that your video card is set up correctly.

I hope this helps

I feel stupid now. Thanks you, the login manager was not showing up, so I searched my packet manager and found xdm uninstalled. I feel like a moron. Thanks though, that thing about the login manager sparked a little fire in my brain.
