Why on earth does Ubuntu have all the KDE apps?

Hi, I installed Ubuntu 6.06 several months ago and have been really happy. I don't generally download distributions as I have a 3GB monthly bandwidth limit. I got Ubuntu 6.10 (edgy) with this month's Linux Format (issue 88) and at first when I inserted the disk I couldn't update via synaptic because it showed that everything was updated.

Out of curiosity I mounted the ISO image which was on the DVD and saw whether I could run it through Qemu, before I got to that I saw an icon "distro-upgrade" or something similar to that. To my astonishment when I clicked it it updated . Now I'm pretty happy with my Edgy and it kept most of my previously installed applications. However my brother did a clean install from this distribution from the same disk and now he has got lots of KDE applications such as:

KGet
Kolf
Konquest

and probably another 20 more...why is this ? (He has the Gnome desktop and it is Ubuntu not Kubuntu).

You have probably selected the package kubuntu-desktop. You can at any time add KDE to your Ubuntu installation by installing this package. I assume you did it yourself, or it where done by another package you installed's requirements.

If you are low on available harddrive space or you just do not feel like using KDE (you should, by the way); then it is a simple process to uninstall kubunu-desktop and all it's tied KDE applications.

Weird, was this after upgrading? or right after rebooting after installing?

By default Ububntu is going to install enough of the KDE libs to get some basic KDE apps to run,... Compatibility and all.

Is there a real problem with them installing the libraries?!?!?

I've never really heard of someone complaining...
