Why is Ubuntu One so slow?

When I (try) to upload files to Ubuntu One; generally, the upload doesn't happen. What does happen is [on] the bottom panel says: "Sending request to files.one.ubuntu.com . . ." It may sit there like that for hours without an upload happening. Once, I left my computer on and left for a couple of days; when I got back it had uploaded. Is this the norm?

Is there something wrong on my end (other than PBKAC)? What can I do to speed things up? Or can they be speeded up? Is the description of Ubuntu One one thing and the reality something else?

What to do? Any help would be much appreciated.

Ubuntu one is quite fast

ctkroeker 04-16-2010 12:56 PM

Even on a slow connection it uploads fast enough for me. Just tried it last night. It lacks a lot of features but I guess those will come yet.

Perhaps you are being blocked by a firewall?

Are you behind a proxy?

Well, I am in the same boat as Randy. Not behind a proxy or firewall, but Ubuntu One is so slow as to be utterly worthless. I've given up on it.

I once used Ubuntu One. Once being the operative word. I found it far too slow, no matter where I tried to use it.
Dropbox is a better solution, IMO.

no proxy or firewall, here, either.

Ubuntu One slow - An alternative

Ubuntu One is a great idea, but lacks the delivery. Top layer files will sync fine but the more sub-folders where a file is located the longer to sync. However this is a relatively new service and they will get it right in the end.

In the mean time Dropbox (dropbox.com) works well and is fast and integrates well into Ubuntu Gnome.

I am a follower of Ubuntu, personally I think it is the most rounded and compatible Linux OS available at the moment, I am sure many would disagree... but at the moment Ubuntu One does not work, it is in many ways still in its Beta stage...

How should that be? What has the position in your filesystem to do with the upload speed.

compatible to what?

Back at topic, at first, the speed of Ubuntu One is mainly dependent on the upload speed of your connection. If it is slow, for whatever reason, uploads to One will be slow.

@Randymanme: How big was the file you wanted to upload?

mr-integrity 01-13-2011 02:09 PM

Sorry to disagree but Ubuntu one is exceptionally slow, regardless of your internet connection. I can imagine that people with dialup might think it is acceptably fast but then what would they know ;) (I used to be one of these poor people).

I have 10/10MB/s at home, I work in a datacenter with 1GB fiber from Interoute and a 3g mobile connection on the road. I have been trying to use ubuntuone on a machine with all of these connections. At home I have my stationary pc connected and syncing my netbeans project folder (thousands of tiny files totalling approx 40MB) and it has been "syncing" for the past two days. The real proof is that I can log into ubuntu ones web interface and download (or upload) everything within a few seconds while ubuntu one folder "syncs".

It's a fact that the amount of time increases more with the amount of small files than it does one file equalling the same amount. I beleive this is because of any or all of the following:

1. Ubuntu one's service is poorly designed.
2. The storage equipment can't cope with the IO.
3. It is artificially limited due to a low investment.

This is why I will be using dropbox (as of yesterday evening), which syncs all my files and folders in minutes rather than days.

BTW, Canonical has aknowledged this issue and have stated that they will make performance a priority for ubuntu one for natty.

I have found this to be true also, but I use sub folders ALL the time to keep all my pictures, documents, and other files organized and easy to find.

Hardware?? Other services that build their apps primarily for Ubuntu???

This is extremely False!! Because I use Both Dropbox and UbuntuONE and Dropbox is very fast (syncing all my 3GB's of files in an hour or so. While Ubuntu one takes atleast 3 to 4 hours for about 1.8 GB's. This is on the same network and I have a 6 gigabit connection. Don't know what my upload speed is but again, very fast with Dropbox, slow as cold molasses on UbuntuONE. Now that said, Syncing a few large files will take ALOT longer than a whole lot of small files. On Both Dropbox and UbuntuONE. Haven't tested exact times for a comparison. But then again don't feel like checking the progress every 2 minutes.

I LOVE the work Ubuntu is doing (despite their continual removing of programs and features that they've had for the past 5 years, for seemingly no reason!! 11.10 has NO screensaver??) And I try to do all I can to support them and Open source software in general. I have tried to find open source alternatives for every single program and service I use and have almost got 100%. But Dropbox is a hard one to get right. Cause even though their security sucks!!! Their simplicity of installing and fast syncing make it almost impossible to find something to replace it (aside from hosting you own cloud at home and keeping up a domain subscription)

Anyone know of a way to speed up UbuntuONE???

I wish screensavers would have died a long time ago, they are nothing but a waste of electricity, they haven't served a real purpose for nearly 20 years. Even CRTs don't benefit from them, since pretty much all of them have a sleep mode. Maybe if you just want something to watch while stoned, but I think there are far more interesting things than a pipe maze.

Though, I'm sure you're free to install xscreensaver yourself and needlessly shorten the life of your backlight and waste power.

For what it's worth, there is a subforum on the Ubuntu forums specifically devoted to Ubuntu One: http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=367
Perhaps you could try posting there if you can not find a solution here.
Many people have had problems with Ubuntu One being slow. This has been a common complaint for as long as the service has been available. Here is one such thread, which at least has some suggestions on how to measure the speed of Ubuntu One: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1717869

You have to use the Ubuntu One Control Panel utility on your computer to upload and Sync files as the Web site doesn't upload properly or not at all,Ubuntu One is working on that problem. Once the program is set up the backups should run automatically. Just make sure that the files to backup are Synced and your are good to go. Also Link any programs/apps. with a backup utility and set the backup to Unbuntu One. This will insure that the backups are made to that particular program/apps.
