Why can't I install mySQL?

I have been spending the whole week trying to install the mySQL. I followed the instruction on http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/...ng-binary.html but it just doesnl't work. Here is how I tried:
- I downloaded the mysql-standard-5.0.22-linux-i686.tar.gz to /home
- Then I just typed what mysql.com said: (even in "sudo" mode)
Quote:
shell> groupadd mysql
shell> useradd -g mysql mysql
shell> cd /home
shell> gunzip < /home/mysql-standard-5.0.22-linux-i686.tar.gz | tar xvf -
shell> ln -s /home/mysql-standard-5.0.22-linux-i686.tar.gz mysql
shell> cd mysql
shell> scripts/mysql_install_db --user=mysql
shell> chown -R root .
shell> chown -R mysql data
shell> chgrp -R mysql .
shell> bin/mysqld_safe --user=mysql &
Then what it gave me after typing the last step:
Quote:
root@my-laptop:/home/mysql# bin/mysqld_safe --user=mysql &
[1] 8072
root@my-laptop:/home/mysql# Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /home/mysql/data
STOPPING server from pid file /home/mysql/data/my-laptop.pid
060723 01:13:26 mysqld ended

[1]+ Done bin/mysqld_safe --user=mysql
I even tried to open the "host_name.err file in the data directory" but found nothing in the file.
Can anybody please help me install mySQL? I'm new to Linux as well as Ubuntu and I'm just getting tired of installing this again and again, I even reinstalled the Ubuntu for 3 times but the mySQL just doesn't work.

Have you already tried to install mySQL through Synaptic package manager? - Ubuntu Dapper's been certified *proud* for to be used with mySQL, both companies cooperate, and the mySQL packages are in Dapper's repositories.

IMHO -- always look in Synaptic 1st. You'll know the install will work and you'll be able to get update through the normal update facility. There's nothing wrong with compiling, its just that the package managers won't be aware that you installed the application. Updates will also be totally manual for packages you compile. Note that Synaptic, apt-get, dpkg and Add/Remove from the Applications menu all use the same repositories and package data base. You can mix the use of those with no confusion.

Here is my situation: I just started using Linux recently. I want to learn PHP and I heard that Linux with Apache, mySQL, PHP will be ideal for learning. I already installed all packages that have the name including apache, mysql, php(5) in the Synaptic Package Manager. But now, I got no clue how to try out a first PHP script of my life. I tried to follow some online instructions but they were just different to what I saw in my computer, I guess those instructions are out of date. Therefore, can anybody please show a newbie like me how to start writing a very simple code of PHP and run it on Ubuntu? Any help will be welcome since I want to study PHP with mySQL so much.

That - at least - is easy.

To have a look at a mySQL sample database, you'ld press Alt+F2, and type in "mysql-admin". Next, you're prompted for connection settings:
Server Hostname should be localhost,
Username should be root,
Password should be the password you assigned during installation of mySQL.

This is just for a start. HTH. - It took me months to figure out how to connect from anywhere to any database, the first time, - while, after all, it's not really hard. - Don't give up, it's worth it!
