Where do apps get installed to when doing a sudo apt-get install ?

Hi

I did a
sudo apt-get install mysql-community-server-5.0
and MySQL5 got installed.
But how do I find out where it got installed to ?

The files get installed to many places on the computer. Are you looking to start the server? Access it?

When I run the same command, I get this:

I did get that msg first - but later it somehow installed. I verified it by accessing mysql.

But coming to the installation location question - Im thinking like in Windows - it would normally reside in C:\Program Files\Program Name.

Is there no linux equivalent of Windows Program Files ?

Code:

dpkg -L packagename

will show you all the files installed by that package.

Actually it isn't the case that a program in Windows is only installed to C:\Program Files. Typically there will also be multiple directories and files (some hidden by default) created in C:\Documents and Settings\. There also may be dlls and uninstallers installed into C:\Windows\system32. and don't forget the changes made to the Windows registry.

try the command: whereis [command]

for more info on that command: man whereis

many executables are installed to /usr/bin/

which [command] will shorten that list to where the executable is.

echo $PATH will give a list of folders where the system looks for executables.
