I installed Kububtu 12.04 today, so I'm not "married" to it yet.

I don't know of any one here in LQ who can solemnize marriage. You can put my name though on the list of witnesses when it comes

The first issue I have is the ugly wallpaper that I cannot change.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.
You can change that Menu -> System -> Configuration. KDE is known for excellent and flashy themes and wallpapers: initiative and resourcefulness is the only limit.

The next issue is where there are 2 tabs open in Firefox,

Open firefox at the URL type "about
:config" (without quotes of course) then Search for string like "tabs" look for the initial tabs Open and set the integer to '1'.

I can no longer see the title of the window, or the Close, Minimize, or Maximize buttons.
There seems to be an image blocking those buttons.

Often caused by--
1. Screen resolution if it is set low;
2. Setting the size of icons to greater than 28 points; or
3. Setting the size of system font to greater than 9 points;

Your KDE configuration might have been screwed. Clear up whatever initial values in your home dir, do this:
Code:
you@home~$ find . | grep kde | xargs rm -fr && rm -fr .cache/*
then zap your X "Ctl+Alt+Backspace" and login again.

Nothing is wrong with your hardware. It is good enough for KDE.

I upgraded from Mint 10 and I'm not too happy at the moment.

If you were in
Mint 10 you should have upgraded into Mint 14 (which is a very good edition) BUT NOT INTO UBUNTU! Two beautiful ladies, the mother and the daughter, are two different persons and characters: you cannot marry BOTH of them! It is against the law of nature and computing sanity.
Hope that helps.
Good luck.
