What's the Ubuntu equivalent to Fedora's inittab?

I installed Ubuntu 9.0.4 64bit server. I then installed gnome to make some configuration task easier. But now I'd like Ubuntu to no longer boot to gdm. I want it to boot to the login prompt as it did before I installed gnome.

In Fedora I would just change the boot level from 5 to 3 in /etc/inittab. What's the equivalent in Ubuntu?

If you have the file /etc/X11/default-display-manager you can edit it or
do

echo "false" | sudo tee /etc/X11/default-display/manager

This will disable gdm/kdm/xdm , or whatever you have in that file

You can put it back with a text editor, or do for example

echo "/usr/sbin/gdm" | sudo tee /etc/X11/default-display-manager

I tried that solution. The only problem is that it also appears to disable connecting remotely with the desktop using nxserver and gnome.

I was hoping that Ubuntu had a way to boot to prompt without disabling the desktop for remote sessions. I'll do some more testing to make sure that it was indeed that setting that interrupted nxserver.
