Whats going on here?

root@ed-VGN-AW11Z-B:~/tmp/solr# tar xzvf apache-solr-3.6.0.tgz

gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

aaa trying to install solr!!

It sounds like your file is corrupted. Try downloading it again.

Alternatively, if you're not using a custom Tomcat install, Ubuntu has a package called solr-tomcat that will install the dependencies for you.

I never bother passing the compression method, tar is smart enough to figure it out ( assumes a current version )

It could be that your downloader automatically decompressed it ( but I have not seen that happen in a long time )

But I would assume some corruption, check md5sum ( assuming it is listed on download site )
