Rep:
What do you want to see in Ubuntu 17.10?
Came across this on HN, but it's very applicable to LQ members, and I'm interested in what the response here will be. If we get sufficient interest, I'll forward the thread to Dustin.

Howdy HackerNews!
Dustin Kirkland here, Product Manager for Ubuntu as an OS platform (long time listener, first time caller).
I'm interested in HackerNews feedback and feature requests for the Ubuntu 17.10 development cycle, which opens up at the end of April, and culminates in the 17.10 release in October 2017. This is the first time we've ever posed this question to the garrulous HN crowd, so I'm excited about it, and I'm sure this will be interesting!
Please include in your replies the following bullets:
- DESCRIPTION: A lengthier description of the feature. Bonus points for constructive criticism ;-)
- ROLE/AFFILIATION: (Optional, your job role and affiliation)
We're super interested in your feedback! Everything is fair game -- Kernel, Security, Desktop apps, Unity/Mir/Wayland/Gnome, Snap packages, Kubernetes, Docker, OpenStack, Juju, MAAS, Landscape, default installed packages (add or remove), cloud images, and many more I'm sure I've forgotten...
17.10 will be our 3rd and final "developer" release, before we open the 18.04 LTS (long term support, enterprise release) after October 2017 (and release in April 2018), so this is our last chance to pull in any big, substantive changes.
HEADLINE: At a minimum, adopt Mint's Python extensions to apt command
DESCRIPTION: Coordinate with Linux Mint (and Debian etc. if possible) to develop common cross-distro extensions to the functionality of the apt command, whether in the code itself and/or through Python scripts (as Mint has done), in order to improve the adoption of apt as the go-to command-line interface to the APT library.
I use Linux Mint which is a derivative of Debian and Ubuntu. When I install any of these distributions I have to spend a lot of time going into the system control files and reconfiguring how the users are set up. I need to set up a root user, a superuser, and from one to three ordinary users. I also have all of these users appear on the GUI login screen.
I would like to see the installer offer to create a root account, a superuser account, and from zero to many ordinary user accounts. The installer will check to make sure that you have either a root account or a superuser account or both. The installer will check to make sure you have a superuser account or at least one ordinary user account or both.
Not a Ubuntu user, I installed it in a VM recently to understand a friend's issue and instantly hated Unity (no flame war intended, just a personal feeling).
It seems that I have been heard reading the first paragraph of this post

It does perhaps have some relevance to this thread, for me anyway, in that I was thinking of asking Ubuntu to consider dropping development of Mir in order to throw the company's resources into getting Wayland fashioned into a worthwhile replacement for X. I didn't do that though because I thought that such long-term design decisions would be beyond the remit for a single version, 17.10. However, it looks like the end of Unity has also spelled the end of Mir.

It is soooo VERY sad to see probably at least one person per week (just LQ; much more in 'whole world') *loosing 'everything'*, by running an release/version 'upgrade'. (Sometimes, even in response to clicking 'ok' on M$Win-like pop-up!) I doNOT mean to get into a dialog on backups and 'being more careful' (nor debate how 'naive' my post may be). CODE -can- be made 'more robust'! Invest in doing that! (Keep/Make Linux 'great' for 'basic' desktop user marketshare!)
