Weird boot error, help please.

Operating System: Ubuntu Dapper 6.06.1 (64 bit) // Windows XP Professional SP2 (32 bit)
CPU: Intel E6300 Core 2 Duo
Motherboard: Intel 975X Platinum
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All operating systems are stored on a single WD Raptor 10,000RPM SATA harddrive. Partition 1 is windows, partition 2 is swap, and partition 3 is ext3 "/". Grub boots up fine and I can run windows no problems, but when I go to select the Ubuntu operating system, I get the error:

##START OF ERROR

Decompressing Linux. . . ok, booting the kernel.

Alert! /dev/sda3 does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

BusyBox v1.01 (Debian 1:1.01-4ubuntu3) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built in commants.

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

##END OF ERROR
I have found a lot of info on google, but not any solutions for the problem, it seems like a lot of people are having trouble with this. If anyone here could help me out with this problem, I would be very happy .

Thank you,
sp0k34

If your first parition is Windows then my guess would be that /dev/hda1 is your Windows partition. If it is trying to be mounted as ext3 but isn't that might cause the first line about invalid argument. Also it would explain not being able to find /sbin/init - it isn't on that partition. Can you get to your grub config file? It should be /boot/grub/menu.lst (on Debian at least). There should be a line specifying the kernel to boot with an argument specifying the root filesystem. Try changing it to the partition that contains your root file system (if it isn't /dev/hda1).

This is all just educated guessing so apologies if it is completely off track. Good luck!
