Watch out for new version of xserver-xorg-core!

Hello all!

Well, by now I thought that I would see some posts regarding the broken xserver update package!

If anyone has updated their xserver-xorg-core nad has not rebooted yet, I seriously advise you to write down these instructions that I got from jlx over at the ubuntu forum.

after rebooting and getting to the text console type 'sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10

To reboot after the downgrade type sudo shutdown -r now

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the warning.
The ubuntu forums are full of complaints. Hope the get it fixed soon, meanwhile, I'll just leave things as they are and not update anything!

Thanks for the info. I can't wait to get hoem to fix the system. Is there a way to undo the last update? As in a situation like this were there is no "comfortable" x-server running for us who depend too much on it.

Thanks

Strange! Last night it was version 1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.3 and now after looking at my update manager, it shows version 10.4.

Maybe it's a fix, I'm not sure.

I think 10.3 was the broken one, 10.4 should be okay but I'm going to wait a while before I update it (just in case ;)).

Thanks!

Thanks for posting this! I accepted this update during my lunch hour (work from home) and didn't think anything of it until I tried to reboot and X wouldn't load. Your instructions worked perfectly and made this a minor inconvenience instead of the major pain it could have been!

apparently the version just before update was xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10 the update which crashes ubuntu is xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.3 and a new fix is xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10.4

by now I would sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core=1:1.0.2-0ubuntu10

Hey, I installed this update (the results unknown to me until I rebooted), and I was able to still login, but the login window was larger. Plus the desktop wasn't drawing correctly. I installed the update when it came out, rebooted and still had the same problem, even after downgrading.

Then, in the xorg.conf file it says:
Quote:

...
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# if you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
After the new update was installed, I ran that command, and it fixed it. So if anyone is in my situation with no fix even with the update, do just this.

I've got xserver back but now through the normal GUI Ubuntu log in screen and wait clock but then just to a brown screen with cursor. It just sits there until programming dims it and then will wake up to the cursor again. reboots the same way

Sound Familiar?
Anyone have this or know how to deal with it
Thanks
David
