Warning; x server died on me
Kubuntu 8.0.4 with KDE 4.1
I was in a session when the 'adept' icon in the panel informed me that there were 4 updates available. One of the updates was kernel headers. I had the choice to ignore or run the updates and I bravely chose to run them.
Adept dutifully did as commanded and started running the updates. It was there for quite a long time so I clicke the 'details' button to see the output of the update. There was an ascii menu displayed that offered options on how to handle my current grub menu but I was not able to respond to it so I brutally killed the update process. What else could I do?
The next time I booted the x server was not found. Nor could it be fixed, at least no way a noob like me could figure out. I suspected the interrupted update was the problem so I ran 'sudo apt-get update' and was informed that dpkg was broken. However, the output offered a command to repair dpkg. (I forget the command but it worked)
After fixing dpkg the apt-get update worked. Sure enough when I ran it the ascii menu came up again. This time I could respond to the menu since it was running in a terminal. The update completed proper and this fixed the issue with the x-server and everything is back to normal.
Now I know. Never let adept update the kernel-headers and I thought I would share that with everyone.
