I have a VSNL broadband connection and I tried many things to get connected to it in Ubuntu. Finally I got the solution from different sources and I am sharing that with you my friends:
1. First switch off the modem and right click the Network Manager icon on the right top of the notification area and click the "Edit connection..."
2.Now click the wired tab and in that Add a connection.
3.Then in the new window pop up after clicking the add button give a connection name.
4.Then click the IPv4Settings tab
5.From the Method selection box select the "Manual" option.
6.Now give the IP address of your system
7.Next give the Netmask which can be 255.255.255.0
8.Next give the Gateway which is the IP of your modem which will be obtained from your connection properties while you are connected to the Internet from a windows OS. For a VSNL modem it can be 192.168.1.1
9.Now close the window and switch on the modem and wait for a while for recording the details from the modem.
10 Open a terminal and type "sudo pppoeconf".
11 You will get a blue screen and forward through it till you get the user name and password prompt.
12 provide it with exact user name and password and proceed till you get the start connection prompt .
As WikipediaŽ showed me, VSNL is indeed a very popular service provider in India, but LQ is located in the USA & serves a worldwide audience. Don't expect us to know such things -- have the courtesy to supply links.

Dangerous ground! It is a very human tendency to think only in terms of the world we know. If I could have a Rupee for every time someone on LQ has suggested buying from Walmart ...
