Ludi,
I found the problem with my Ubuntu setup but I didn't post the answer on this forum (but I did
here). I notice you regard yourself as a newbie, so I hope you can follow my solution below.
The simple answer to the problem is to change the permissions on a .vmware folder found in the home directory to 'root'. If you know how to do this then it is straightforward.
I don't know what distro you are using, whether it is a gnome based or KDE, so I'll step you through what I did with my Ubuntu (gnome) setup.
1) I ran Nautilus using "sudo nautilus" in the terminal window, i.e. I gave myself root permission to run the file manager program.
2) In Nautilus, I found my way back to "Home" directory and clicked on "Show Hidden Files" found under the View tab in Nautilus. This will show all the hidden files in that directory.
3) Scroll down to the .vmware folder (the leading "." indicates that the folder or file is normally hidden).
4) Right click the mouse and choose the "properties" link.
5) Choose the "permissions" tab and set the folder to "root" access.
6) It won't hurt to change the other folders in there to 'root' access as well.
That is what I did to fix my problem. I hope it helps you too.
Regards
John
