Video woes after re-install

I hosed my Ubuntu install last night from messing with the kernel. "OK, no big deal," though I, "I'll just re-install." So I did.

Problem is, now my desktop is stuck in 640x480 mode, where before I was running 1024x768.

So... I tried fixing it with xorgconfig. Which, for some odd reason, doesn't seem to list my video hardware (Intel 845 chip).

Where do I go from here? The only hardware difference between my initial install & the re-install is a different monitor, but the new monitor can easily handle more resolution than I was running at first.

Thanks in advance....

check your hardware manager (or good old lspci) to make sure your video card is still found.

However - you'd probably best edit your xorg.conf file directly. Find the bit that talks about monitor resolution and change it to the desired one.

(There will probably be a range - listed smallest to highest - xorg has just picked the first one and let your monitor figure what to do. Reorder the list highest to lowest.)

However - if this is really a video card thing - and it was detected before - your best be is a fresh install all over again. repartition for good measure.

I'm doing a clean re-install now. If it still comes up lo-res, I'll try the edit. Thanks!

[edit]
It still come up lo-res. lspci reported the correct video chip. Editting xorg.conf worked like a charm. My screen is beautiful again! Huzzah! Thanks again!
