Appending the vga16
ff will only affect the video during boot up. The issue I think is the video settings in /etc/X11/xorg.cong. Those setting affect video resolution and refresh rates after you log into Gnome or KDE. If you install it on the laptop, you can run:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
after installing to change the video settings in /etc/X11/xorg.conf For a typical laptop, you choose a refresh rate of 60 Hz at the native resolution of the LCD panel. When you run "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" select "medium" level for monitor configuration and choose the resolution and refresh rate. If you don't know what video driver to use, select "vesa". That should get things working.
