Question upper panel gone

I have either ubuntu 9.x or 10.z.
When the upper panel displayed double graphic postings of the icons (such as clock : clock ), I right clicked and selected remove. I was expecting one of the icons to be removed. Instead, the whole upper panel disappeared. Now I only have a GoogleEarth icon on my desktop main field. On the bottom panel, there are only two null desktop icons and one trash folder icon.

Question 1: How do I bring up a terminal window from this state?

Well.. its a round-about-way.. but right click on the desktop, create a launcher -- for the command use '/usr/bin/xterm' then save.. double click the launcher it made on your desktop.

Alternately, you can press Ctrl+Alt+F2 to go to a console.

This may help (once in terminal -- try Ctrl+Alt+T)
Reset panels:
Code:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
rm -rf ~/.gconf/apps/panel
pkill gnome-panel

You can find out what version of Ubuntu you are using by opening a terminal and running:
Code:
cat /etc/lsb-release
It will report what version you are using.
FYI If you are using Ubuntu 9.10, it will reach end of life (EOL) in April of this year:http://www.ubuntugeek.com/ubuntu-ver...e-details.html Note that Ubuntu 9.04 has already reached EOL. After an Ubuntu version reaches EOL, there are no more security updates for it. Also, the repositories disappear, so you will no longer be able to install programs for 9.10.
The solution is to upgrade (or better yet, do a clean install of) Ubuntu 10.04 or 10.10.

This sounds odd. Were you messing around with the panel settings to cause this to happen? It is ok to play around and experiment, especially when you are new to linux. I just would like to know what caused this to happen.

To get the upper panel back, you should be able to right-click on the lower panel and select to add a new panel. You can then move the new panel to the top of the desktop, or where ever you want it. You can then right-click on the new panel and add what ever menu items you want for it.
Alternatively, the commands that lidex posted should restore your panel settings to Ubuntu's pristine state, as far as I know. I just wanted to point out that you can always add panel(s) or items to the panels manually when you want to.
Write back if you need more help.
And welcome to the LQ forums!!
