Upgraded system to 10.10 - does not boot into new kernel

I upgraded a PC from 10.04.1 to 10.10 and it will not boot into the new kernel. Because the system started as Ubuntu 7.10, it is using Grub 1.

It gets to the point where it displays "Starting up..." then displays a flashing cursor at the upper left of the screen, it does nothing further.

Yet it will boot into the previous kernel from the 10.04.1 installation, but X will crash if I login using the XFCE desktop, yet it will log into LXDE without a problem.

Is this a known issue (not booting up with new kernel)??

The CPU is an AMD Athlon 32-bit which does have CMOV (per cat /proc/cpuinfo). I have also manually run various apt-get commands to upgrade/update everything, no change resulted.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

It probably is a GRUB 1 issue. The problem I think is that the new kernel isn't compatible with GRUB 1.

So you have done dist-upgrades from Ubuntu 7.10 all the way up to Ubuntu 10.10? Is that correct? I am impressed that you have managed to dist-upgrade all the way from 7.10 without running into problems before!

Grub2 has been the boot loader for Ubuntu since version 9.10:

GRUB 2 is the default boot loader and manager for Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) and Ubuntu 10.04 onwards and many other operating systems.
To make sure you have fully upgraded to grub2 from grub-legacy, see this section of that grub2 tutorial:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gr...0to%20GRUB%202
This will help to at least rule out problems with grub2 versus grub-legacy.

If it were me, I would just do a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10. This will eliminate any detritus that may be left over from previous Ubuntu versions and start you off with a clean slate going forward. I always do clean installs of Ubuntu instead of dist-upgrades.

It would be helpful to at least make sure you have fully upgraded to grub2 before doing anything else though.

+1 for clean install.

If you have a separate Home partition it makes it so much easier to do a clean install.
