Upgrade Ubuntu, 'Module is unknown' on login. Windows 7 down tubes?
Update to Ubutu 11.4 is it? The log in screen says 'module is unknow' when I try to log in. Windows 7 on the first partition has gone down the tubes too. Doing this on Lynx. Thanks any help.

Since you used lynx to post, I guess it's safe to assume that some part of Xorg is not working. First thing I'd try is renaming /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d and rebooting.
Don't know why Win7 would be messed up; I've installed U1104 (and several preliminary versions of it) on my desktop PC without clobbering Win7 on /dev/sda1. However, I don't use grub2, so I hesitate to offer advice on how to fix any problems that might be due to it. |
For the record: Could get into X by selecting 'recovery' at the grub prompt, and then logging in at the black screen, and then using startx. However X still had the wrong resolution - something dodgy about the whole thing. So just gave up on Ubuntu and installed Debian, it seems to have a new stable version, Squeeze?? The problem with upgrading to Ubunto ?11.4 *might* be that I had forgotten that the security hardening program Bastille was installed:
Code:
bastille -r Huge thanks, unfortunately did not spot your post before putting in Debian. Incidentally get impression it is possible the 'Module' is something to do with the login program and perhaps not X. |
