update-apt-xapian-index internal behavor

That's "internal," not "infernal." Though really it's both. Yes, the dire CPU/RAM hogging behavior is still present on Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty, and it will kill your netbook dead. Especially on a 90-degree day.

But I have to ask: what is it doing? Not in terms of its utility, but in terms of its algorithms?

It is running at 19 niceness and idle ionice. There is no way it should be bogging down the system like that, even though it is a hog. It simply should not be getting the CPU timeslices or IO priority to do that!

Does anyone know why it appears to ignore both niceness and ionice idle status? Because that just does not make sense to me. Things should not even be able to do that from userspace.

So it turns out it's this awful misfeature again:

Try to make things faster automatically -> break CPU scheduling and make the OS disobey the user by default. Fantastic.
