Unable to open USB port : Permission denied After 7.10 upgrade

The printer is a canon i960. It worked fine in 7.04, after the upgrade it is no longer found using GUI tools. I set it up using CUPS http://localhost:631. Any attempt to print a test page results in the error :
Quote:

Unable to open USB port device file: Permission denied
I get a similar response from checking the command
Code:

lpstat -p -d
.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

[edit] Update:
Tried adding a different printer, this one is recognized but I get the same error message if I try to send a test page to it.

[edit] Any thoughts? Even a direction to go if not a solution. Please!!

In the latest Ubuntu kernel, they have changed the way that it deals with USB systems. I was not aware that this affected mainstream applications, such as cups, but it may be that the particular drivers for your printer are affected.

I found out about this when I was trying to get Virtual Box to let me use my USB device in a virtual Windows XP machine.

Where do the drivers come from?

[edit] Can you print a test page as root?
