Unable to log in to graphical mode after upgrade to Maverick Meerkat!

Hi,
I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 from 10.04 today. However when I rebooted after the upgrade, I was a presented with the text mode instead of the regular graphical mode.
I tried to do sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, but still I couldn't log into graphical mode.
Then I copied the xorg.conf.failsafe to /etc/Xorg/xorg.conf and did a startx. This time I was able to log into GNOME, but the resolution was restricted to 1024 x 768 instead of the usual resolution for my Acer Aspire 5738z laptop which has an Intel GMA 4500 M graphics card.
Any suggestions?

Try to run sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg again, this time from the GNOME Terminal (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal).

What drivers do you have for the Intel chip? This may be a driver issue (you may have to use the open source Intel driver instead of vesa).

Sorry for the delay in responding!

Actually I got a tad impatient. Somehow I didn't like the direction in which Ubuntu was moving after 9.10. For me 9.10 was the best of Ubuntu. Each and every single part of my lapy was perfectly recognised and was working oob. Problems came up after I upgraded to 10.04. And now 10.10 was the absolute nadir (again, from my point of view). So I have gone back to 9.10. I have realised that if it ain't broken leave it as it is :-)

Any way I really appreciate your response. Thanks once again!

Maybe, I'll try it after a stable version of Meerkat is released!

Install unity in ubuntu 10.04 LTS (lucid)

Unity is primarily built for maverick (10.10), but we are conscious that some people want to test it on lucid. For those, we have setup a PPA and backport unity component to lucid.

If you are on Lucid, load a terminal and run the following commands

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:canonical-dx-team/une

sudo apt-get update.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-netbook-unity-default-settings

Logout and choose in GDM your “Ubuntu Unity Netbook Edition” menu option when you click on your username.
I'm upgrading my old 9.10 to 10.04 too today, we'll see how it goes...
