unable to get online with Xubuntu 8.04 live CD

Hello all,

I have successfully installed Ubuntu 8.04 and Xubuntu 8.04 on older PIII PCs (personally, I like Xubuntu a lot better ) However, I rescued a laptop from the dumpster, an HP Pavilion ze4560. This is my very first laptop, and I am clueless about laptops.

It currently has Windows XP Home installed, but of course I want to switch to Xubuntu. Running the live CD was fine. Everything worked as expected. However, I could not connect to the Internet. Network Manager is completely grayed out. The computer has wireless installed -- an HP WLAN 54g W450 network adapter, which works fine in XP.

Now, I could just be a dingbat: is getting online even possible with the live CD? I never attempted it with the other PCs. One plugs right in to DSL. I installed a wireless adapter in the other one after Xubuntu was already installed -- getting connected only took a few minutes after that.

From what I've read, the HP network adapter is kinda fickle. I'm fine with buying a PCMCIA card if that's what would be a better bet for wireless connectivity (I'm looking at the D-Link WNA-2330).

Many thanks for any and all suggestions,

Tom

You might check the HCL to see if the HP nic works with Linux. There is a link in the main menu in the upper right corner on every webpage from LQ.
Principally every Linux distribution offers a wide variety for getting your thing online: dial-up, cable, dsl and /or wireless are all supported.

The first thing you can do is cd to /etc. Then enter more resolv.conf

This is what you should read:

Code:
### BEGIN INFO
#
# Modified_by: NetworkManager
# Process: /usr/bin/NetworkManager
# Process_id: 5705
#
### END INFO

nameserver xx.xx.xx.xxx
The lines beginning with an # are not important, it's the last line specifying the nameserver that matters.
