Ubuntu won't reboot automatically

I've noticed that my recently installed Ubuntu won't reboot my laptop automatically - either from Logout, Restart (GUI) or from a command line (shutdown -r now). It shuts down in both cases but will not reboot. So if I want to reboot I have to choose shutdown and then turn on again manually.

Are there any settings I can check? Or is this probably just my particular laptop do you think. I have a Toshiba 1800 dual booting with Windows XP. There are no problems on the Windows side with rebooting.
