Ubuntu will not reboot

I am using Ubuntu 8.10.

I have tried the pull down menu. I clicked on ReBoot and it did not work.

Then I tried the command line. I used sudo reboot. That did not work.

What happens is that the PC gets hung at the point where I see the Ubuntu logo. It just stays there. I end up having to pull the plug in order to shutdown the PC.

When its at the Ubuntu logo, press Ctrl+Alt+F1 and it should take you to a console screen where you can see the status of anything its attempted to do.

If Ctrl+Alt+F1 doesn't work, try the others, so Ctrl+Alt+F2 etc.

If you choose shutdown instead of reboot, does the computer shutdown properly?
Is this a desktop or laptop? Can you post the specs? including the motherboard chipset?
Shutdown / reboot problems are often related to acpi configuration issues. When you boot the computer, hit F6 to add boot options. Type acpi=off and boot up. Then try and reboot and see if it reboots ok. If it does, then that confirms that is an acpi problem. You could then try booting with acpi=force and see if you can still reboot properly.
