Ubuntu Ultimate

Hello everybody I just joined. I just installed Ubuntu U;timate on my spare Hard Drive, it looks really good so far but I have problems getting online with it, I am unfortunately in an area where only dialup is available, and I'm having trouble configuring the dialup PPP0E with my ISP details I seem to be locked out for some reason even though I have unlocked the PPPoE config it is greyed out and won't allow me to type anything in the properties, and then even if I did manage to get my details in there I wouldn't have a clue how to get it to dial up is there anybody that knows a way around this? Also the Linux distro's that I have used seem to hang up the internet on me after only a few minutes is there a way to stop this without having to download things constantly? Thanks in advance!!!!

open a termial and type lspci and post it.if you are using a internel modem then you have a windows modem. http://linmodems.org/ some modems like the lucent agree mars venus etc chips are supported somtimes. if you have one of the supported chips that does not mean it is part of your system you may have to build it. Somtimes it is beter to get a real modem that plugs in to your usb or serial plug in.If you have the agre chip or the old lucent and a few others except conexiant that is another issue. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto

Search the HCL, and find a better more linux friendly modem.

Modems are picky under linux, and most Winmodems don't function correctly.

I'd suggest one that is Intel chip based, as they tend to have a bit more speed.
