ubuntu ultimate 1.3 belkin wireless wont work

hi all,

once again i find myself unable to connect to my wireless network.

i am using ubuntu ultimate 1.3 which is edgy plus some stuff.
im using a belkin card for which i have the windows driver (got from ndiswrapper wiki)
i have amd64 chip but have to assume ubuntu ultimate is 32bit as i can find no reference to its architecture anywhere.

using the "windows wireless" gui i loaded the correct driver and prooved it worked with ndiswrapper -l. i got the "bcmwl5a driver present. hardware present" feedback.

then went to "networking" gui and activated the wireless and filled in all the correct details. essid, hex-wep, dhcp etc

iwconfig shows that the wireless is not responding

so i went to "hardware manager" which lists my belkin and states it is an unknown vendor. i guess this means the driver has not loaded properly.

so i did modprobe -l and ndiswrapper.ko is listed as loaded.

but still the network card has no lights and nothing is indicating that it is working at all.

"iwlist eth1 scan" simply returned "no results"

basically i am guessing that the modprobe driver and the pci card are not talking.

so what do i do next.

with suse there was a setting in network settings to use modprobe as the module for the wireless device but i can find anything of the sort in ubuntu.

any help please?

ps. i have both the 32bit and 64bit drivers for my card but am guessing that ubuntu ultimate1.3 is 32bit so this is the one i currently have loaded. of course i tried the other and rebooted but this did not help.

ok i thought i would update the post in case this problem is not unique to me.

i eventually got the light to come on the network card by following this tutorial.
http://wiki.waningsun.net/index.php?...26_Linux_HOWTO

This effectively removes the bcm43xx driver which is known to play havoc with ndiswrapper.

i installed the latest ndiswrapper from the site (currently 1.43)

adding the ndiswrapper to /etc/modules meant that the driver starts at boot. a quick check on System > device manager confirmed this.

yippee.

im still not there as my wireless still doesnt find any networks.
using sudo iwlist wlan0 scan

however the network manager now recognised the presence of my card and i can scan using the gui rather than the command line. (thats progress)

any body with any clues as to why my set up doesnt find the network please shout out.

im using
ndiswrapper 1.43
belkin/broadcom card using bcmwl5.inf windows driver
ubuntu ultimate 1.3
with a wireless-G network
and a 64bit hex wep key

all the hardware works fine as booting the same machine into the dreaded XP works flawlessly as expected.
