Ubuntu Total System Lock On Networking Use
I am running most recent version of Ubuntu (cannot remember exact xx.yy-zz). Anytime I use any bit of the networking devices, within the slightest amount of actual traffic the entire system dies. NumLock key light drops, entire system is unresponsive, only fix is a hard power off via power button (aka 5 sec hold in).
If there is anyway to produce an error log or record the commands as they happen please let me know. Rather new to the Linux systems, running for experience and better access to hardware actions than Winblows. -Hate |
First thing to do would be to examine the logs -- specifically /var/log/kernel(.log) and maybe /var/log/messages(.log) if you have such a file. Look for events leading up to the "crash" to see if anything stands out as looking like bad news. Post the relevant pieces of log for us. Also please verify which Ubuntu it is, since that may be quite relevant (i.e. lucid lamprey, bony badger, etc.., or whatever it is called, OR the release version, i.e. 9.04, 9.10, 10.04, etc.).
Also, since it may come to this anyhow, please tell us about the machine and the hardware, i.e. what sort of computer is it (make/model/laptop/desktop?) and what sort of networking device(s) are involved (wired, ethernet, wireless, usb, PCI card? What make/model?) and what type of activity is going on, i.e simple web-browsing causes this? Or FTP file transfers for example. And, welcome to LQ! Sasha |

Code:
Mar 25 18:58:20 hate kernel: imklog 4.2.0, log source = /var/run/rsyslog/kmsg started. I am unsure of what I am hunting. I also noticed that trying to copy all 4mb of the kern.log via clipboard caused serious slow down and barely operational conditions. -Hate |
