Ubuntu Studio 8.10 blank screen on startup

I installed UbuStu 8.04.1 and everything appeared fine but after the initial screen with the ubustu graphic and status bar the login page does not come up and my green monitor light turns to flashing yellow. alt+ctrl+F1 will not bring up the terminal and no sounds play (drums @ startup) I wiped the drive and install ubuntu studio 8.10 and get the same result except that my monitor light now stays green instead of reverting to flashing yellow but I still get no startup sounds and cannot get to the terminal

sounds like graphic card problems. When I installed linux on my laptop 2 years ago with a nvidia 8600GT card no linux system took it except ubuntu. I had the same problem as you just nothing. What is your graphic card, something fancy (cross-fire)? Try booting into the 'safe mode' or recovery mode and see if that works. The other thing to do is try other distributions (as much as that pains me to say so), and look at the graphics setup while installing.

I have had no problems with any other versions of ubuntu (gutsy, hardy, Intrepid) only with ubuntu studio (hardy & intrepid). I have had no luck as i mentioned getting into terminal. How would I get it to boot in safe mode? what button combination do i use?
