Ubuntu Server or Desktop for testing the Unix functionality in a virtual machine?

Hi. I'm currently running ubuntu 13.04 on a virtual machine but I get this too slow (the virtual machine and my desktop computer). I'm learning to use linux at command line and I don't need Unity or some desktop environment.

Running ubuntu 13.04 server edition will reduce the resource consumption (I only test unix commands, vi and gcc)?.

Not sure they make two editions anymore but yes, normally a gui from the big name distro's take a lot of resources. Any bash line might be faster.

It would help to diag the vm and associated resources. A simple bios edit may fix it. Describe hardware.

Thanks! I have been installed the server edition on vmware and it gets faster than the desktop edition. I used only to test some commands.
